Day 3 R/V Point Sur Part 3

Here is a short video on the skate dissection. Mariah Boyle, one of the graduate students from MLML, is doing her research on skates. Skates and rays are similar to each other, but skates lay eggs while rays give live birth. Rays usually are larger in size than skates.

*Remember to allow the video to buffer and completely download. It will make the video go smoothly.*

Here is another short video of the skate's heart.

  1. Hi Michelle,

How many chambers to the skate's heart? Is the circulatory system similar to man's w/ venous and arterial? The blood looks fairly well oxygenated. How far below the surface does the skate live? It's interesting it lays eggs as opposed to live births. Where are the eggs laid? How long does it take from the eggs being laid to hatching?

  2. Hello, Mom. These answers are from the collaborative effort of the graduate students, Donna, Mariah, Shaara, and Nicole.

Skates have three heart chambers. They can live in very shallow water and we believe the deepest ever found is just shy of 5000 meters. It is interesting that skates are all oviparous (egg-bearing) while sharks can be either oviparous or viviparous (live-bearers). From paired ovaries most skates simultaneously produce one egg case in each shell gland, meaning that there are two egg cases in a female at once. Egg cases are deposited on the seafloor, often in groups at nesting sites used by many females, and some egg cases possess long tendrils to attach to the substrate and anchor them to the seafloor. We don’t know much about the time between eggs being laid to the time of hatching yet, but estimates are anywhere from a few weeks to over a year. We have some estimates from captive studies (i.e. skates in aquaria) but we don’t know if these same rates apply to their natural environment.
